Server applications are the foundation of modern computing, providing the infrastructure and services that enable seamless interaction, facilitating communication, data storage management, and resource utilization across networks. Server Conquer Fuse solution

Fuses play a crucial role in server application equipment, and based on our extensive experience, here are some examples and recommendations. In Switchgear and ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch) applications, we recommend implementing Conquer’s Power Fuse series. We offer 10x38mm fuses up to 1000V and bolt-in fuses up to 700A for your selection. While there are instances where customers use SMD or Cartridge fuses for lower power models, switchgear and ATS are predominantly utilized in high-power server applications.

 

 

Regarding Server battery backup solutions, Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) find extensive application in high-power server setups, whereas Battery Backup Units are chosen for lower power applications. Turning attention to the Remote Power Panel (RPP) panel, the requisite current ratings are generally on the higher end, ranging from 100A up to 400A, contingent upon the specific server design considerations.

 

Typically, RPP are designed to accommodate bolt-type fuses, so our primary recommendations for this application are the K5F series or BMC series. These fuse series have been identified as optimal choices, aligning with the specific requirements and design nuances associated with high-current applications within RPP panels.

 

 

Within a rack server's internal components, the incorporation of fuses is contingent upon the specific design considerations. The Power Supply Unit (PSU) necessitates the use of fuses, with the selection dependent on whether it operates in a single-phase or three-phase configuration.

 

 – For single-phase applications, it is recommended to employ SMD or Cartridge fuses with a voltage rating of 250V. The Conquer SEL or UBM series is particularly well-suited for such scenarios.
 

 – In the case of three-phase configurations, the PSU demands the use of Cartridge fuses with a voltage rating of 420V or higher. Commonly employed fuses for three-phase PSUs include the Conquer UBF, UXF, ABF, and ACF series. These selections ensure optimal functionality and reliability in three-phase power supply units within rack server systems

 

 

 

PSU Fuse Roadmap

Leveraging our extensive collaborative experience in the Power Supply Unit (PSU) industry, it has become evident that industry leaders prioritize cartridge fuses in their PSU applications, seeking higher power capabilities, albeit within constrained spatial considerations. Additionally, Fast-Acting fuses are chosen, as they require coordination and a faster reaction with their circuit breakers.

 

 

 

 

Fuse Coordination with Circuit Breakers.

The process of selecting the appropriate fuse for a circuit breaker involves several crucial steps to ensure the optimal and safe functioning of the electrical system.

 

STEP 1 : Finding the suitable fuse Ampere rating

Selecting a fuse to work alongside a circuit breaker, first step will be identifying the correspond ampere rating. The simple formula is as following:

In a case where the customer has a model operating at 5.5kW and 380V.

 

  • The calculation is as follows: 5.5kW/380V = 15A/0.75(de-rating factor) = 20A
     
  • Therefore we recommend fuses with a rating above 20A

 

 

STEP 2 : Relation between Fuse and Circuit Breakers

 

When Selecting a fuse to work alongside a circuit breaker, a crucial step is to ensure that the fuse's IT curve matches the tripping curve of the breaker. Here are some important considerations:
 

  • Non-Overlap: The curves of the fuse's IT and the breaker's tripping should not overlap. This prevents confusion in their response during a fault condition.
     
  • Faster Melting Time: The fuse should melt and interrupt the circuit faster than the circuit breaker takes to trip. This ensures that the fuse reacts promptly to faults.
     
  • Gap Between Curves: A larger gap between the IT curve of the fuse and the tripping curve of the breaker is ideal. This ensures a clear distinction in their response times, enhancing coordination.

 

Additional considerations

In the Server industry, considering the high voltage application and testing conditions, the arcing phase during the fuse melting process might prolong the overall melting time.
 

To mitigate this potential issue, we recommend utilizing fuses that incorporate explosion-proof sand within their structure.

 

Fuses offer an efficient and cost-effective solution to safeguard Server systems against overcurrent activities. The above application guide offers valuable insights into appropriately sizing fuses to ensure optimal circuit protection, preventing overcurrent situations, and ensuring continuous system operation.
